Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@studentgrantassistance.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The Student Grant is Ireland’s main financial support scheme for third‑level students. It provides a maintenance grant, a fee grant, or both, depending on your household income and personal circumstances. It is available to new and continuing students once they meet residency, income, and course requirements.

Most students under 23 on 1 January of the year of application are assessed on their parents’/guardian’s income. You may be considered independent only if you have lived separately from your parents for at least 12 months before 1 January and have financially supported yourself during that time.

 New Student Grant applications

First time new Student Grant applications for the 2025/26 academic year open on 3 April 2025 at 12 noon. You should apply as soon as applications open, even before you know your CAO offer. You can update your course choice later.

The priority closing date for new applications is 10 July 2025. Applying before this date gives you priority processing and reduces the chance of delays

 For Renewal Applications

For 2025/26, renewal applications open on 5th March 2025 at 12 noon.  Applying early helps avoid delays, especially if the awarding body requests additional documents or clarification. The priority closing date for renewal applications is 5 June 2025.

The documents requested from you will depend on your application details. Once your application is submitted you are advised exactly which documents apply to your situation.

  • Uploading the wrong income documents
  • Submitting incorrect household income or missing pages of statements or revenue forms
  • Not explaining changes in family circumstances
  • Applying under the wrong category (dependent vs. independent)
  • Submitting unclear or incomplete evidence

Straightforward applications can be processed quickly. Cases involving self‑employment, separation, illness, or income changes may take longer due to awarding body often requests additional documentation.

The awarding body looks at the total household reckonable income from the previous calendar year. This includes wages, self‑employment income, rental income, pensions, and some social welfare payments. Certain payments are excluded, and allowable deductions may apply.

The awarding body assesses the income of the parent you normally reside with. You may need to provide evidence of separation, maintenance arrangements, or living arrangements.

You may be assessed as an estranged student, but the awarding body may require  supporting evidence. Many students need help preparing this correctly.

You may qualify for a change of circumstances review. This is different from an appeal and requires documentation to show the change.

Yes, but only if you meet strict criteria around living independently and supporting yourself financially for at least 12 months before 1 January.

 You can appeal if:

  • Your income was assessed incorrectly
  • Documents were misunderstood or not considered
  • Your circumstances were not fully taken into account
  • You believe you qualify for a higher rate or special rate

You typically have 30 days from the date on your decision letter.

This depends on the issue but often includes:

  • Updated or corrected income documents
  • Clarification letters
  • Evidence of separation, illness, redundancy, or other changes
  • Proof of independent living

You can escalate it to the Student Grants Appeals Board. The case must be well‑prepared and supported with strong evidence.

 The service includes:

  • A      full review of the student’s situation
  • Identification of the exact documents required
  • Preparation/organisation and submission ready application
  • Guidance to avoid delays
  • Support with submission for a seamless process

 Students often struggle with:

  • Understanding which documents the awarding body actually require
  • Explaining special circumstances clearly
  • Avoiding mistakes that cause delays
  • Preparing appeals or change‑of‑circumstances cases

Professional support reduces stress and increases the chance of a smooth approval.

Yes. You can get help with:

  • Responding to the awarding body’s requests for additional documents
  • Reviewing what you’ve already submitted
  • Preparing an appeal if needed

 Have the following ready:

  • Basic personal details
  • Your PPS number
  • A general idea of your total household income
  • Any letters from awarding body if you have already applied

Most cases are completed quickly once documents are provided. More complex situations may require additional time, especially appeals or special‑circumstance cases.
